Overview

As a Broadband Technician III, you will perform extremely complex installations, disconnects, and service changes for residential and business customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home) and support PON/Metro E. These services include, but are not limited to, video service, HSD Services, and home/business phone service. This role performs advanced troubleshooting from the tap to the customer's electronic devices (TV, DVD, Modem etc.). This position will be responsible for installing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable. This position will be knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications.

 

The pay range listed for this position represents the low and high end of the base compensation range. The actual offer amount will carefully consider multiple factors, such as relevant skills, qualifications, work experience, location and/or competencies that align with the specified role.  Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses and equity awards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex installation of all necessary cable wiring (interior and exterior) and hardware from the tap to the customer’s equipment for reception of cable and other company services that are offered for single, multi-family, and/or commercial dwellings. This may include subject matter expertise related to the RF distribution of signals. All aspects of the network from the optical node to the distribution tap may be included as subject matter criteria. This may include system architecture – design principles and HFC architecture; distribution components – actives, passives, and coaxial cable; signal types – analog, modulation schemes, frequency spectrum, and impairments; and maintenance and troubleshooting – sweeping, FCC rules, retum path, test equipment, status monitoring, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Performs connects (new connects and reconnects), disconnects (requested and non-pays), upgrades, downgrades, and relocates; installs additional outlets, fiber connections, hardline cutovers, and installs or removes equipment (i.e. converters).
  • Performs all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC NEC, and NESC).
  • Tests equipment to identify and repair signal strength issues and ensure optimum reception. Uses Locators, TDR’s, FDR’s and read system maps required.
  • Monitors and records system, drop, and in-house leakage; properly records all required information on work orders, surveys, referrals, etc.
  • Promotes cable, internet, and other company services; educates customer on proper use of the service, including how to add additional services, channel lineups, proper equipment usage, and other services that are available.
  • Collaborates and communicates with other departments to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Cleans, maintains, stocks, and secures assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years technical telecommunications experience -OR- current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS's business needs including but not limited to our obligations to our customers and to our customers' needs.

Other Qualifications

  • Upon hire, must successfully complete customer-specific requirements, which may include a background check administered by the customer.
  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements in relation to operating vehicles with a combined GVRW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of >10,000 lbs.
  • Certifies proficiency in the subject matter expertise related to the RF distribution of signals. All aspects of the network from the optical node to the distribution tap are included in this certification curriculum.
  • Reliable and responsible, with a strong work ethic dedicated to a team.
  • Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications.
  • Familiarity with company products and services.
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, as well as effective communications skills (verbal and written) for interaction with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Broadband Premise Expert course

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to sit, stand, write and operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment and telephone. The associate regularly communicates with customers. The associate is frequently required to move about and reach for items. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May be required to balance or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

This position may require working outdoors, in mechanical/ equipment rooms, and possible extreme weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
