    This position is responsible for identifying new major/longer term revenue generating opportunities (i.e., new products and/or major product enhancements), that support the long-term financial objectives of TDS and determining the financial feasibility of each opportunity by applying agreed upon financial metrics.

     

    The Manager-Product Development manages the systematic product development and implementation of new products and services. This position is responsible for conducting the research necessary to develop a statement of work (SOW).  This includes market, vendor and technology research.  In addition, this position must assess the competitive environment and TDS’ opportunity.  The position serves as the champion of new product development for assigned products and services related to the ILEC, CLEC and cable customer segments (product life-cycle enhancements to existing product lines are handled by the Product Management team). 

    Responsibilities

    • Manage all significant, new product development initiatives through the entire gated product development process.
      • Create & submit written business case documents.  Provide inputs, review & complete financial models (in cooperation with Finance).
      • Lead efforts with all functional groups to gather relevant data & insight to complete analysis of the product development initiative. Facilitate discussion & resolve issues as they arise.
      • Present written business case & financials to the entire executive team & request approval to move to the next stage of the process at each gate.
      • Lead First Office Application (FOA) efforts by working directly with sales channels, sales support, customers, & Product Advisory Committee (PAC) team members to test all aspects of the product & processes.
      • Provide all product-related information to Marketing & Sales Enablement as required to develop a go-to-market strategy & accompanying support materials. Provide all product-related information to Training as required to develop training material.
      • Provide first 30 – 180 days of product management for the newly developed product.
      • Own post project/phase reviews to cultivate a “learning organization” in accordance with the relevant process model.  Present findings to senior leadership.
    • Research, identify, analyze, assess & present new revenue producing products & services in a systematic manner.
      • Stay well versed in industry trends & educated on new product & technology developments.
      • Stay updated on competitors’ offerings & trends in new markets, applications & product lines.
      • Visit markets to gain sales channel & customer feedback & insight.
      • Attend industry trade shows to learn from & network with peers.
      • Maintain relationships with vendors & industry contacts  
    • Vendor relations & management – act as primary contact for strategic vendors. Maintain day-to-day relationships to ensure Company is receiving appropriate vendor product support. 
      • Submit feature & product enhancements to vendor’s product development team to assure #TDS’ strategic priorities are addressed.
      • Escalate product-related vendor issues, as required, & assist with escalation of technical issues.
      • Negotiate contracts & vendor pricing, working with legal, procurement & other internal stakeholders
    • Maintain high level of technical expertise and knowledge regarding solution sets & product platforms in order to understand technical abilities/limitations of a product/platform.        
    • Present updates to various executive level groups on a weekly/monthly basis to keep them aware of new product development efforts & the associated revenue opportunities.
    • Maintain regular contact with sales channels & TDS customers to identify & address product gaps, pricing issues, & teaching moments.        

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications 

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) -OR- 4+ years professional work experience.
    • 3+ years in sales, product management/development and/or marketing.

    • Specialized training in marketing, product management/development and/or sales skills.
    • Knowledge of up-to-date data and telecommunications protocol, policies, standard practices, laws, regulations and proposed changes and the ability to apply them consistently.
    • Excellent computer skills (Access, Excel and other database applications).
